Authentically Irish: Popular Pubs in Northern Ireland
The best pubs in Belfast – Atmosphere, Live Music, and History
Belfast is known for its vibrant pub scene with countless cozy pubs where you can not only drink excellent Guinness but also dive into the history of the city. Whether it's long-established traditional spots or trendy scene locations – everyone gets their money's worth in the pubs of Belfast. Here are my recommendations for a pub visit in the Northern Irish capital:
Kelly's Cellars - Tradition since 1720
If you have a thing for historic pubs, you can't miss Kelly’s Cellars. This cozy pub has been around since 1720 and is considered one of the oldest continuously operating pubs in Belfast. Behind its whitewashed walls and low vaulted ceilings, the 1798 uprising was allegedly planned. Today, Kelly’s is especially known for its live music. Four nights a week, you can wind down your evening with traditional Irish music here. Plus, there's a wide selection of whiskeys, craft beer, and of course, a perfectly poured Guinness.
The Dirty Onion - live music in Belfast's oldest building
The Dirty Onion is located in the city's oldest building by far. The former warehouse dates back to 1780. Today, The Dirty Onion is a popular spot for live music seven nights a week. Inside, you'll find brick walls, wooden beams, and a large beer garden. Besides the music, you can look forward to a diverse selection of drinks and delicious food.
The Duke of York - meeting place for the music scene
Hidden down a cobbled alleyway lies the Duke of York, another pub with a long tradition. The colorful collection of mirrors, posters, and music memorabilia on the walls tells the story of the pub, which is a popular meeting spot for Belfast's music scene. Bands like Snow Patrol have played their first gigs here. From Thursday to Sunday, there is live music of various genres. Along with that, they serve craft beer, a huge selection of Irish whiskey, and delicious pub classics.
